About me

My name is Roger Peter McArthur Douglas. When I was 13 my mother passed away from colon cancer. The only thing I had to comfort me was yugioh and Pokémon. After I got out of the military, I worked on my BA in psychology. While working on my MS in MFT I was having difficulty engaging my teen populations: substance use/probation/ group home. The clients were bored with the standard play therapy interventions because they are more geared towards kids.... so I started to work on Douglairian Therapy. 3 years later it is finally completed.

How does it work?

This intervention uses Maslow hierarchy of needs as a backbone. The aim of the game is to be the first player to play their level 5 self actualization need.

This game has several purposes: (a) end the stigma around mental illness and substance abuse through exposure and normalization; (b) teach the players how to identify and advocate for their needs; (c) serves as competitive, thought provoking game among family and friends; (d) serves as an ice breaker and self assessment tool in a therapeutic environment; and (e) teach the player that life events can be overcome with the right tools!

Scenario 1

It is Billy’s first day in a new school. Billy has anxiety because of his upbringing. His parents are concerned about Billy. The family takes Billy to school. Billy does not engage with the students or teachers. The parents are having second thoughts about moving. They call you asking for suggestions. You give each parent a deck. You offer psycho education about the game and Maslow. Billy picks the anxiety deck because it looks cool and he has heard the term used around him..at him. Billy starts playing with his parents. The first card Billy draws is the Meditation Tool Card. He asks his parents if they have ever tried meditation before. They have a discussion, he opens up. He notices that his mother chose the depression deck. He asks why. She tells him that she has depression, etc etc..

Scenario 2

Gary is a teen who was referred due to his behavioral issues. Dad is worried about power struggles. Dad chose the anxiety deck. Gary chose the Pyromaniac deck. Dad finds all of his level 1 basic needs in his starting hand. Talk about luck! Gary’s hand has 3 level 3 love needs and 2 level 5 self actualization needs. Gary cannot use any of these cards because all players must start with their level 1 basic needs and work their way up. Over 2 turns, dad plays all 5 level 1 basic needs and is now on level 2. Gary is very angry. Gary draws a event card called Arson and destroys all of dad’s needs. Gary smiles in content. dad asks Gary, why did you do that? Gary says, “ I don’t like it when people have nicer things than me, no one ever gave me nice things, so....I just take it from them....

Scenario 3

Linda has been experimenting with cannabis since the age of 12. Cannabis is her everything. Linda does not have insight into how cannabis is negatively affecting her life. She also hates talking with social workers. The social worker decides to play douglairian therapy with Linda. Naturally, Linda chooses the cannabis deck, so the social worker mirrors and chooses the same. The game is close. When Linda reaches level 2, the social worker reaches level 2. When Linda reaches level 3, the social worker uses her event card Probation and destroys Linda’s level 3 love need. Linda cries and opens up about how she feels restricted by probation. They discuss it then go back to the game. This time, the social work is about to play her last level 3 need but Linda counters with her event card Motivation Loss. Social worker asks Linda if she ever feels a loss of motivation. They have a discussion about it.

In a nut shell. The game itself teaches the player about Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Each card in each decks can be used as a conversation starter. The game itself is fun and competitive. I believe that each mental health practice can benefit from having my intervention in their office. Along with their other play therapy tools.

Please feel free to forward this email to anyone you believe can benefit from this. Thank you for your time.
